The racehorse and jockey motif allow me to explore themes of luck, chance, and risk while also celebrating my love for the sport of horse racing. In horse racing, “scratched” refers to a horse that has been taken out of the race before it has started by the trainer or veterinarian. During the global pandemic, precautions intended to slow the spread of COVID-19 had become politicized. I used sandpaper to rough up, de-collage, and physically scratch into this artwork. The racehorse and jockey are constructed out of re-purposed product packaging for face masks and N-95 respirators, and this is surrounded by photos of various social situations and activities that were canceled in 2020. Social distancing created a great deal of stress on our human psyche, and we collectively began to consider how risk factors into decisions regarding public health.
