“Gears” was printed at the Carriage House Press at the James Millikin Homestead during my time working with an art collective of printmakers. Casey Wilen was making abstract prints to explore formal elements of art like shape, color, line, rhythm, and balance. Casey often used found objects to achieve different effects on the etching press and our experiences making art together every Thursday night at CHP is still a huge influence on my work today.
Gears as a subject in art appealed to me because they simultaneously functioned as a beautiful abstract shape and as a representational image that could suggest meaning.
Juxtaposed with a horse and rider, this artwork explores themes of movement, efficiency, innovation, advancement, interconnectedness, and growth.
