“Bet on the Bay” directly appropriates lyrics and music notes from the popular folk song by American Romantic Composer Stephen Foster.
Historical artist Hans “Jean” Arp and other Dada artists embraced chance as a tool for liberating creativity from rational thought. Apparently frustrated with a drawing he had been working on, Arp finally tore it up, and let the pieces flutter to the floor of his studio. Some time later he noticed the expressive power of the scraps something he had been trying to achieve in vain.
In this artwork, I have collaged the musical notes and lyrics from “Camptown Races” into the narrative horse racing scene using chance techniques.
