While studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I began drawing baseball games from observation. This particular artwork was drawn at Miller’s Pub on Wabash Ave. across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago museum.
The 162 game regular season provides a consistent subject matter and a familiar and repetitive composition. The ritual of watching the games and following a baseball season makes for a predictable routine for my drawing practice. This allows me to take creative risks in my approach to drawing the figure which might be expressive and exaggerated or simplified and abstracted. This subject allows me to experiment with different art media, explore non-traditional materials, and layer popular cultural iconography in order to embed meaning. Each artwork is titled with baseball jargon as I follow along with the television broadcast playing in the background.
