I went to 🇫🇷 France with my mentor and friend, artist Arturo Barrera, to make art and accidentally created a midnight football ritual. We had an unforgettable time in Paris with amazing food, museums, galleries, and an instant classic Chicago Bears playoff game vs the Packers at 2 AM. I take the train to the château in Champagne-Ardenne and meet a group of international artists. I settled into the studio and started making work in a beautifully surreal landscape. With the support of the Chateau staff, I plan a Sunday night watch event for the football game that includes spray-painting 25 pennants, building an altar, and creating “Super Bowl squares” signed by entire residency of artists and staff. I host a participatory installation for artists who don’t care about American football, document it all on film, and watch a community form around the absurd beauty of this midnight sports ritual.
